"The movie's filled with brilliantly done individual scenes. Alice, for example, has a run-in with a fellow waitress with an inspired vocabulary (Diane Ladd, an Oscar nominee for this role). They fall into a friendship and have a frank and honest conversation one day while sunbathing. The scene works perfectly." - Roger Ebert (Chicago Sun Times)
"When her car breaks down, she takes a job at an Arizona diner run by crusty Tayback and becomes best pals with salty Diane Ladd. Kristofferson is a rancher who frequents the restaurant, and he and Burstyn soon begin an awkward courtship. Burstyn won a well-deserved Oscar for her performance... Also receiving Oscar nominations were Ladd for Supporting Actress and Getchell for his screenplay." - TV Guide
"Diane Ladd plays the mouthy flo, (She later joined the TV series), and Valerie Curtain plays the shy Vera. An uncredit cameo was made by Laura Dern as a girl who is eating a banana split. Don't blink or you'll miss her." - George Jobson
"Burstyn’s best actress Oscar was a vindication for actresses everywhere, but as her crude co-worker Flo, Diane Ladd comes close to stealing the show; watching her hold court at Mel’s Diner, trading foul-mouthed insults with truckers and keeping the owner in his place..." - Jake Euker ( filmcritic.com)
